Shelf units for children's and teenagers' rooms

Tall and narrow: most take up less than a metre of wall and hold as much as a piece twice as wide. Every collection has one, finished in the same tones as the rest of the series.

How tall a shelf unit should be

The units in this category run from about 150 to nearly 200 cm tall. The lower ones end around a small child's eye level: they can reach every shelf themselves, which is also what makes them put things back. The taller ones hold more, but the top shelves belong to the parent and to things nobody needs daily — boxes, board games, keepsakes.

What goes on it

Open shelves exist so you can see what is on them. Folders and textbooks at desk height, reading books lower down, baskets or toy boxes at the bottom — the less a child has to open, the likelier tidying is to happen at all. Some models combine shelves with a drawer or a closed compartment at the base, for the things you would rather not look at.

A shelf unit beside the desk

These usually end up next to the desk, because that is the one place where books genuinely need to be within reach. Where there is no wall space for it, a wall module hung above the desktop does the same job — most collections include both, so you can take whichever fits the room.

Finish and collections

The units are made of furniture board with an antibacterial and hypoallergenic coating, some with metal structural elements. Every collection has one, so the shelf unit can be matched to the bed and wardrobe already in the room — from the openly childlike Cars Piston Cup and Frozen to the quieter Irony, Siena and Vintage Mode.

Common questions

Which shelf unit for a child's room?

For a younger child, a lower one ending around their eye level — they reach every shelf themselves, so they put things back themselves. For an older child, a taller one, which holds more and keeps the top shelves for things not needed daily. The units here run from about 150 to nearly 200 cm.

Does a shelf unit need fixing to the wall?

A tall, narrow piece a child could climb should be secured against tipping — that is the standard rule for children's furniture, whatever the model. How it is fixed depends on the type of wall.

Shelf unit or wall module above the desk?

A shelf unit holds more and stands on the floor, so it needs a clear metre against a wall. A wall module takes no floor at all and hangs directly above the desktop. Most collections include both.
